The International School of Lusaka has introduced the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) at Middle school level and I am pleased to introduce myself as the Coordinator of this innovative programme.
The International Middle Years Curriculum is a concept-focused and internationally inclined curriculum which is rigorous, challenging and engaging and is designed to address the unique learning needs of children aged from 11 to 14 years. With the IMYC, ISL students study thematic units which help them to connect their learning experiences across subjects, make meaning of their learning and develop international mindedness. Each unit will be taught for 6 weeks with an introduction through a mind provoking “Entry Point” and will be concluded with a media project called “Exit Point”. Students are also encouraged to develop Personal Dispositions such as Enquiry, Adaptability, Resilience, Morality, Communication, Thoughtfulness, Cooperation and Respect by all their subject teachers and form tutors. For more information on the IMYC, visit www.greatlearning.com The IMYC builds on the skills and knowledge that ISL students acquire at IBPYP level and adequately prepares them for IGCSE and IBDP. They are challenged to take the lead in their learning and to be more independent and open-minded.
Students following the IMYC at ISL study English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Information Technology, Art, Music, Drama, Physical Education, and French or Spanish. They also have personal, social and health education (PSHE) lessons with the school counselor every fortnight. Middle school students are, furthermore, encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities which usually take place in the afternoon.The IMYC has been introduced at ISL to run through years 7, 8 and 9, but is currently running for year 7 only. It will be gradually rolled out to year 8 and 9 in the next two academic years.Please feel free to contact me for any questions or concerns regarding the curriculum.
